“We Are the World" is a song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and recorded by a supergroup of popular musicians known as USA for Africa. The charity single was intended to raise funds to help famine-relief efforts in Ethiopia, which experienced unusual drought in 1984/1985.
The artists who participated in the event included Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper, Willie Nelson, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, and many other well-known singers and musicians.

As a final activity, watch the video and listen to the song while you think of how your life would be if you had been born in an extremely poor country.
(Take note of your reflections in order to discuss them next class).

We Are the World

There comes a time// When we heed a certain call// When the world must come together as one

There are people dying // Oh, and it's time to lend a hand // To life, the greatest gift of all

We can't go on // Pretending day by day // That someone somewhere will soon make a change

We are all a part of // God's great big family // And the truth, you know, love is all we need

We are the world

We are the children

We are the ones who make a brighter day

So let's start giving

There's a choice we're making

We're saving our own lives

It's true we make a better day

Just you and me

Woah, send 'em your heart // So they know that someone cares // And their lives

will be stronger and free // As God has shown us // By turnin' stone to bread // And so we all

must lend a helping hand

[Chorus]

When you're down and out // And there seems no hope at all // But if you just believe

There's no way we can fall // Let us realize // Oh, that a change can only come //

When we // stand together as one...

[Chorus]Repeat 9 times
